Pets Best was founded in 2005 by Dr. Jack Stephens, the “father” of the pet insurance industry in North America.

As a practicing veterinarian in 1979, Dr. Stephens euthanized a dog named Buffy because her owners elected euthanasia instead of allowing him to diagnose and treat Buffy. Weeks later, Dr. Stephens ran into Buffy’s owner at the store. She was with her daughter who recognized Dr. Stephens and exclaimed, “You’re the man who killed my dog.” This encounter changed Dr. Stephens’s life in an instant and he immediately began on his quest to develop a solution that would help pet owners be financially prepared for their pet’s unexpected veterinary care.

In 1981 Dr. Stephens launched the first pet insurance company in North America. Years later, along with Pets Best CEO Greg McDonald, Dr. Stephens founded Pets Best to change the pet insurance industry making it better and more relevant for pet owners. Thus the name “Pets Best”.

The team at Pets Best is comprised of pet owners and pet lovers, many of whom have veterinary backgrounds and are involved with animal rescue. We understand the special bond that exists between humans and their pets, and we work to ensure pet owners across the country can better afford the best veterinary care.
