For nearly 100 years, Boscov’s has been known for its great values and Famous Brands. Boscov’s has a rich history of serving the needs of our loyal customers by offering a broad assortment of high quality merchandise and setting the gold standard in customer service. Having started more than a century ago with Solomon Boscov’s dream and his pack containing $8 worth of merchandise, Boscov’s now is America’s largest family-owned Department Store, with 43 locations across six states and a growing eCommerce business serving customers across the United States.

Through hard work, honest and loyal coworkers, fair prices and quality merchandise, Boscov’s first store, established in 1918 at Ninth and Pike streets in Reading, Pennsylvania, grew year after year. When Solomon’s son, Albert Boscov, and son-in-law, Edwin Lakin, actively joined the company in 1954, this original store was renovated and enlarged. Albert Boscov’s love of advertising impacted the company as its newspaper ads were enlarged and made more exciting. The company expanded by opening Boscov’s West in November 1962, followed by Boscov’s North in August 1965. After a tragic fire at the original Reading location, Boscov’s East opened in Exeter Township in November 1967 with much excitement and celebration. After tragedy struck again when Boscov’s West was gutted by a fire, the company’s loyal customers pushed for the store to be reopened, which it was in November 1968. Boscov’s first out-of-town store was built in Lebanon in August 1972, and additional stores followed in quick succession. Today, there are expansion and refurbishing plans for many existing stores, as well as more opportunities for new Boscov’s stores on the horizon.

Although founder Solomon Boscov passed away in 1969, it remains the company’s conviction and resolution that all Boscov’s stores retain the same feelings of warmth, friendliness, courtesy, charm and service he put into his first store.

Historically, the turnover of Boscov’s employees has been extremely low at not only the senior management level, but throughout the organization. This consistency has allowed Boscov’s to utilize its own experienced people as it expanded and to selectively hire talented and experienced management for an occasional management slot when necessary.

Year-round, Boscov’s is actively and intimately involved with the non-profit organizations in each of our local communities. It’s important to us that our fundraising efforts remain within our local communities, so we can directly help all of our neighbors.
